Etymology

Cognate withLithuanianlai̇̃škas,láiškas(letter),Latvianlaiska(leaf of a flax stalk),laiksne(white water-lily), andOld Prussianlāiskas(book). Baltic forms require pre-form ofProto-Balto-Slavic*laiskas, while Slavic forms require*leistas. Ultimately possibly fromProto-Indo-European*leyd-(to let).[1]

Despite similar phonetics and semantics, apparently unrelated toProto-Germanic*līstǭ(strip, edge, list) (whenceEnglishlist).
