Borrowed fromUrduپاکستان(pākistān,Land of the Holy), fromپاک(pāk,pure, holy, immaculate, chaste, undefiled) andClassical Persianـستان(-stān,-istān,-stan) (with the form -istān being used after consonants). The word wascoined by Pakistani politicianChuhdary Rahmat Ali in 1933, who published it in the pamphletNow or Never as an acronym of the names of the "Muslim homelands" of western India—Punjab,Afghania,Kashmir,Sindh, andBalochistan.
