In Rhode Island, often said to be fromMassachusettMontaup, but there is little to back up this claim. That word has been compared toMontauk, but may not be identical.[1] Alternatively, named after thePuritanvirtue of Hope, or fromOld Norsehóp(“narrow bay”).[2]
