The US state is fromFrenchMaine, named by its French explorers after the province in France with the same name; unrelated to the name of the river that flows through it. FromOld FrenchCemaine, fromLatin*Cenomania, from the name of theGaulishCenomani tribe ofGallia Celtica. The word wasrebracketed asce(this) +Maine, and thece- was lost by the 12th century.[1]
