FromKhoi +‎San, from thepastoralKhoi tribe (formerly also calledHottentots) and thehunter-gathererSan (also known asBushmen).Coined by Isaac Schapera in 1930, in linguistic usage since the 1950s (following Joseph Greenberg,Studies in African Linguistic Classification, 1955).
