Etymology

[edit]

The town in England isInherited fromMiddle EnglishHull,Hul,Hulle, traditionally derived fromProto-Brythonic*hʉl, fromProto-Celtic*soulos, fromProto-Indo-European*sew-(to press); Breeze instead suggests derivation fromhula, plural ofhulu(hut).[1]Chaucer'sHulle (for expected*Hul,*Hule) is presumably a hypersouthernism.

The surname is either from the English town or Middle Englishhulle, western variant ofhylle(hill); many other place names are ultimately from the surname.
