Etymology

[edit]

Borrowed fromFrenchBhoutan, fromNepaliभुटान(bhuṭān), fromPrakrit𑀪𑁄𑀝𑁆𑀝𑀁𑀢(bhŏṭṭaṃta,Tibet, literallyend of Tibet); probably ultimately fromTibetanབོད(bod,Tibet) +Sanskritअन्त(anta, end). Traditionally considered to be derived viaSanskritभोटान्त(bhoṭānta), but that word is probably aPrakritism.

Pronunciation

[edit]

Proper noun

[edit]

Bhutan

  1. A country inSouth Asia, in theHimalayas. Official name:Kingdom of Bhutan. Capital:Thimphu.
    • 2024 July 4, Lilit Marcus, “This country has a national happiness index. But what is it really like to live there?”, inCNN[1]:
Most foreigners who have heard ofBhutan know two things: the country charges international visitors a $100/day sustainable development fee (aka tourist tax), and that it is the birthplace of the Gross National Happiness Index, a system intended to look after the well-being of citizens and the environment.
