FromOld EnglishÆþelbeorht, fromProto-West Germanic*Aþalberht, a compound of*aþalaz(“noble”) +*berhtaz(“bright, famous”), or fromOld FrenchAlbert, fromLatinAlbertus, itself from the Germanic name. Regardless of the exact route, it is adoublet ofEthelbert. It became popular in 19th-century England due to Queen Victoria’s consort, Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha.
