Feminine ofāfricus/Āfricus, as a noun elliptic ofterra āfrica/Āfrica(literallythe land of the Afri). The adjectiveĀfricus comes from the name of theĀfrī (singularĀfer), a tribal people of the area near Carthage, by addition of the suffix-icus. The Latin term formed alongside GreekἈφρική(hē Aphrikḗ), both terms being attested since the first century.
