-ne-

  1. Marker of potential mood in verbs.
    lähtee → lähteneehe/she leaves/goes → he/shewill probably leave

Usage notes

[edit]

Appended to the strong verbal stem. Exact form depends, as the infix may trigger assimilation or be subjected to it depending on the inflection type of the verb. In particular,-l-,-r- and-s- tend to assimilate the-n- (such astuleetullee), while a stem-final-t- is assimilated into the-n- (such ashuomaanhuomannen). Withnähdä-type verbs, the final-k- becomes-h- (such asnäkeenähnee). The verbolla(to be) is suppletive and has exceptional potential forms with the stemlie(ne)-.
