-ne-
-ne-
FromProto-Finnic*-në-, probably fromProto-Uralic*-ne. Related toIngrian-ne-,Karelian-ne-,Votic-ne-, and probablyHungarian-na-,-ne- (conditional mood markers).
-ne-
Appended to the strong verbal stem. Exact form depends, as the infix may trigger assimilation or be subjected to it depending on the inflection type of the verb. In particular,-l-,-r- and-s- tend to assimilate the-n- (such astulee →tullee), while a stem-final-t- is assimilated into the-n- (such ashuomaan →huomannen). Withnähdä-type verbs, the final-k- becomes-h- (such asnäkee →nähnee). The verbolla(“to be”) is suppletive and has exceptional potential forms with the stemlie(ne)-.
