The origin is unknown. This ending displaced-ast, the original second person singular preterite indicativefirst-conjugation ending, from Latin-āvistī, which in turn came from a combination of-āv- (the regular perfect infix for the first conjugation) and-istī (the second person singular present perfect active indicative ending).
