Uncertain;Strong's Concordance calls it a "primitive word". Possibly from a Mediterraneansubstrate; compareOld Armenianանթայր(antʻayr,“spark; anthrax”),անթեղ(antʻeł,“hot coal, ember”).
Others have connected the word toOld Norsesintr,GermanSinter(“sinter”),Old Englishsinder(“cinder, ashes, slag”), all from*sindrą(“dross, cinder, slag”), and viaProto-Indo-European*sendʰro-(“coagulating fluid, scale, cinder”) cognate toOld Church Slavonicсядра(sjadra,“lime cinder, gypsum”) (compareSerbo-Croatiansadra,Czechsádra). Kölligan suggests a connection toSanskritअन्ध(andha,“blind, darkness, etc.”).
