Etymology

Traditionally explained as borrowing from Old Church Slavonicюгъ(jugŭ)Proto-Slavic*jugъ, compareOld East Slavicугъ(ugŭ). However, self-innovation is also possible, compare the prosthetic /й/ in loanwords or in words that had no iotation in Church Slavonic: dialectalю́дега(júdega) 'hoarfrost' from Finnishhuude, use of a prepositionу(u) like /ю/ in some northern Russian dialects, and dialectalюрод(jurod) in the presence of the Church SlavonicѪродъ(Ǫrodŭ).[1]
