Etymology

[edit]

Inherited fromProto-Yeniseian*pʰʌː(spin, wind, weave,infinitive verb).[1]

Pronunciation

[edit]

Verb

[edit]

хъ (hə́ə̀ [n²]-hə⁰) (action nominal, vt1 or v1 type verb)

  1. twisting, the act oftwisting;spinning, the act ofspinning;weaving, the act ofweaving
  2. (transitive, momentane) subjectturns, subjectweaves, subjectcoils, subjectspins(an object)
  3. (intransitive, momentane) subject istwisted, subject isturned, subject isspun

Usage notes

[edit]
  • The first transitive conjugation (vt1) is used for sense 2, 'turn, weave, coil, spin something', while the first intransitive conjugation (v1) is used for sense 3, 'get twisted, get spun'. For example, a simple construction using the second sense and vt1 conjugation type would be аӈ дива [àŋ + d⁸-hə⁰] (“I wind ropes.”), while a construction using the third sense and v1 conjugation type would theoretically also be дива [d⁸-hə⁰], though it should be noted that in the latter case the verb usually appears in the past (preterite) form, динё [d⁸-n²-hə⁰] (“I was wound.”)
  • See cognateKetава(a⁴-[n²]-a⁰,subject braids, transitive verb) for thelabializing phonetic phenomena seen in past tense.
