Via Volga Turki, borrowed from Literary Chagatay, fromKarakhanidاَذْكُو(eδgǖ,good), fromProto-Turkic*edgü(good, excellent).

A native Kypchak-type reflection isиге(ige), also attested in Bashkir dialects.

Cognate withKazakhізгі(ızgı,holy, sacred),Uyghurئەزگۈ(ezgü,saint).
