Zygophyllum is the type genus of theflowering plant familyZygophyllaceae. The generic name is derived from theGreek words ζυγόν (zygon), meaning "double", and φυλλον (phyllon), meaning "leaf".[3] It refers to the leaves, each of which have twoleaflets.
The genus is distributed inarid andsemi-arid regions ofAfrica, theMediterranean Basin, central Asia,Australia, and North and South America.[1]
Molecular phylogenetic analysis suggested that as previouslycircumscribed,Zygophyllum was notmonophyletic, and the genus was split among a number of other genera, includingAugea,Fagonia,Roepera andTetraena.[4] As of February 2024[update],Plants of the World Online accepted onlyRoepera of these genera, regardingAugea,Fagonia andTetraena as synonyms ofZygophyllum.[1]
As of April 2023[update], Plants of the World Online accepted 117 species (including those other sources place inAugea,Fagonia andTetraena):[1]
