Zubir Ahmed (born 1980 or 1981)[1] is a BritishLabour politician and surgeon serving asMember of Parliament (MP) forGlasgow South West since 2024. He has served as a Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State in the Department of Health and Social Care since 2025.[2]

Early life and medical career

Ahmed was born to Pakistani parents who emigrated to Scotland in the 1960s, and was the eldest of five children.[3] His father was a taxi driver and he grew up inGovanhill,Glasgow.

Ahmed was awarded a scholarship to attendHutchesons' Grammar School, where he was a contemporary ofAnas Sarwar andHumza Yousaf.[4][3] He received aBachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery from theUniversity of Glasgow in 2005, where he studied alongside Sarwar once again.[5]

He was awarded aMaster of Science in healthcare fromUniversity College London in 2012, did a research fellowship in transplantation atKing's College London in 2019, and aMaster of Business Administration from theUniversity of Strathclyde in 2020.

Ahmed was a transplant and vascular surgeon in Glasgow and volunteered inPakistan.[6][3] He has been a fellow of the European Board of Surgery and theRoyal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow.[7] Following his election to Parliament, he continued to practise to maintain his medical license.[8]

Political career

Ahmed joined theLabour Party as a teenager, and decided to stand for office during theCOVID-19 pandemic.[9] He was the Labour candidate forGlasgow Pollok in the2021 Scottish Parliament election, coming second to theScottish National Party's (SNP)Humza Yousaf.[5]

Ahmed was elected asMember of Parliament forGlasgow South West at the2024 general election, defeating SNP incumbentChris Stephens.[10] He was appointed as aParliamentary Private Secretary to theHealth Secretary,Wes Streeting, several weeks after his election.[8]

Personal life

Ahmed is a Muslim and married to a respiratory doctor, with whom he has two children.[11][12]
