Zheng Qinwen (born 8 October 2002) is a Chinese professionaltennis player. She has beenranked world No. 4 by theWTA, achieved in June 2025, and is only the second Chinese player to reach the top 5 in women's singles afterLi Na. Zheng has won five career singles titles, including the gold medal at the2024 Paris Olympics, becoming the first Asian tennis player to win an Olympic gold medal in singles.

Zheng won her first WTA Tour tournament in 2023 at thePalermo Ladies Open defeatingJasmine Paolini, successfully defending the title the following year. In total, she has won four WTA Tour titles, oneWTA Challenger title, and eightITF singles titles, and was named the 2022WTA Newcomer of the Year and the 2023WTA Most Improved Player of the Year. She contested amajor final at the2024 Australian Open.

Early life and junior years

Zheng was born inShiyan,Hubei. Until the age of three, she spent time in her maternal grandmother's home inChengdu,Sichuan, where her mother originated.[3] Zheng began playing tennis at age seven.[4] Two months later, eight-year-old Zheng left her family in Shiyan to train inWuhan.[4][5] About three years later, she moved toBeijing to train withCarlos Rodriguez, the former coach of Zheng's idolLi Na, and then moved toBarcelona inSpain with her mother in 2019.[4][5] She began working with coachPere Riba in 2021.[2]

Career

2021: WTA Tour debut

In January 2021, Zheng won the Tennis Future Hamburg, Germany where she defeatedLinda Fruhvirtová in the final of the 25k event, held at the venue of the Hamburger Tennis-Verband.[6] On 20 June 2021, she won the final of the 60kMacha Lake Open in Staré Splavy defeatingAleksandra Krunić in two sets.[7] Zheng made herWTA Tour debut at thePalermo Ladies Open, where she defeated second seedLiudmila Samsonova in the first round,[8] before losing her next match toJaqueline Cristian.[9]

2022: French Open 4th round, WTA Tour final

At theMelbourne Summer Set 1, Zheng reached her first tour semifinal beatingMai Hontama, former No. 2Vera Zvonareva, andAna Konjuh, respectively.[10] She lost her semifinal match to second seedSimona Halep, in straight sets.[11] A week after the Melbourne Summer Set, Zhengqualified for her first major event[12][13] at theAustralian Open and defeatedAliaksandra Sasnovich in the first round.[14] In the second, she lost to fifth seedMaria Sakkari, in straight sets.[15]

At theFrench Open, Zheng defeatedMaryna Zanevska on her debut at that major.[16] Next, she beat former French Open champion and 19th seed, Simona Halep, her first top-20 win, to move to the third round of a major for the first time in her career.[17] She moved into the fourth round afterAlizé Cornet retired from the match.[18] She lost to top seed and world No. 1,Iga Świątek in the fourth round, citing menstrual cramps as a contributing factor.[19] Despite the loss, Zheng stated she was still happy about her performance and glad that she was able to play against the world's number one.[20] As a result, she moved to a new career-high of No. 54, on 6 June 2022,[21] breaking into the top 50 (at No. 46)[22] a week later after winning her first WTA 125 title at theOpen Internacional de Valencia, defeating compatriotWang Xiyu.[23]

Zheng debuted atWimbledon and defeatedSloane Stephens in the first round.[24] She won her second round match againstGreet Minnen,[25] before falling to the eventual champion,Elena Rybakina, in the third round.[26] During August, at theCanadian Open, Zheng defeated wildcardRebecca Marino,[27] and fifth seedOns Jabeur by retirement for her first career top-10 win.[28] After defeatingBianca Andreescu in the third round,[29] Zheng reached the first WTA 1000 quarterfinal of her career, though lost to 14th seedKarolína Plíšková in three sets.[30] At theUS Open, Zheng defeated 16th seedJeļena Ostapenko in the first round[31] andAnastasia Potapova in the second round.[32] She was beaten in the third round byJule Niemeier, in straight sets.[33]

At thePan Pacific Open in Japan, Zheng became the first Chinese teenager to reach a WTA Tour final which she lost to Liudmila Samsonova.[34] As a result, she reached the top 30 at world No. 28, on 26 September 2022, becoming the first Chinese teenager to do so.[34] Zheng was namedWTA Newcomer of the Year.[35]

2023: US Open quarterfinals, two more titles

Zheng began the season with a win over former world No. 2,Anett Kontaveit, in the first round of theAdelaide International, saving match points in the third set to triumph in a final set tiebreak.[36] She lost toVictoria Azarenka in the second round.[37] On her debut at theItalian Open, she defeated Alizé Cornet,[38]Anna Bondár,[39] and Wang Xiyu[40] to reach the quarterfinals where she lost to 11th seedVeronika Kudermetova.[41] As a result, she reached No. 19 in the WTA rankings, becoming the fifth Chinese player to break into the top 20[42][43] At theFrench Open, as the 19th seed, she beatTamara Zidanšek in the first round,[44] before losing toYulia Putintseva in the second.[45] After the French Open, Zheng split fromPere Riba and began working withNaomi Osaka's longtime coachWim Fissette.[46]

Zheng reached her first Grand Slam quarterfinals at the2023 US Open.

The grass-court season yielded disappointing results, as she lost all three singles matches that she played.[46] She received a wildcard into her next tournament inPalermo. As the second seed, she double bagelledSara Errani,[47] then beatDiane Parry,[48]Emma Navarro[49] andMayar Sherif[50] to reach her second tour-level final in which she beatJasmine Paolini to win her first WTA Tour title.[51]

As the 23rd seed, Zheng defeatedNadia Podoroska[52] andKaia Kanepi[53] to reach the third round of theUS Open, where she beatLucia Bronzetti in a three sets.[54] She defeated fifth seed Ons Jabeur,[55] to advance to her maiden major quarterfinal, losing to world No. 2 and eventual finalist,Aryna Sabalenka.[56] Fissette left Zheng after the US Open to rejoin Osaka who planned to return to the tour after giving birth.[57] Zheng won gold in singles at theAsian Games in September 2023.[58]

She captured her second career title on home soil at the WTA 500Zhengzhou Open defeatingBarbora Krejčíková in the final.[59][60] At theElite Trophy, she defeated compatriotZhu Lin in the semifinals,[61] before losing the final toBeatriz Haddad Maia.[62] At the end of the season, Zheng was namedMost Improved Player by the WTA.[63] In the off-season at the end of 2023 she rehired Pere Riba.[2][64]

2024: Olympic champion, Australian Open & WTA Finals runner-up

Zheng made her debut at theUnited Cup as China's No. 1 player, part of the team's debut at the tournament, and recorded her first win to clinch the tie with Czechia.[65] Team China qualified for the quarterfinals but was defeated by eventual finalist, team Poland.[citation needed] At theAustralian Open, Zheng reached her first major final defeatingAshlyn Krueger,[66]Katie Boulter,[67] compatriotWang Yafan,[68] andOcéane Dodin[69] on her way to the quarterfinals. In the last eight, she defeatedAnna Kalinskaya,[70] before beating qualifierDayana Yastremska in the semifinals.[71] She lost the final to second seed Aryna Sabalenka.[72] As a result, she reached the top 10 in the singles rankings, the second Chinese player to do so after Li Na.[73]

Zheng defended her title atPalermo in July, defeating second seedKarolína Muchová in three sets in the final,[74] having registered wins over Sara Errani,[75]Petra Martić,[76] seventh seed Jaqueline Cristian[77] and fourth seed Diane Parry[78] in earlier rounds, all without dropping a set.

At the2024 Summer Olympics, Zheng won the gold medal in women's singles.

At theParis Olympics, Zheng defeated Sara Errani,Arantxa Rus, Emma Navarro,[79]Angelique Kerber[80] and top seed Iga Świątek[81] en route to the gold medal match. Zheng defeatedCroatia'sDonna Vekić in the final to win the gold medal inwomen's singles, becoming the first Asian player to win Olympic gold in a singles event.[82][83][84][85] This was also China's second-ever Olympic gold in tennis, and the first since thewomen's doubles in 2004.[86]

In October, wins overKamilla Rakhimova,[87] Nadia Podoroska,[88]Amanda Anisimova[89] and 17th seedMirra Andreeva[90] saw Zheng reach the semifinals at theChina Open where she lost to Karolina Muchová.[91] The following week, she finished runner-up at theWuhan Open, losing to top seed Sabalenka in three sets in the final,[92] after wins against Jaqueline Cristian,[93]Leylah Fernandez,[94] third seedJasmine Paolini[95] andWang Xinyu.[96] Entering as the top seed, Zheng defeatedMoyuka Uchijima,[97][98] eighth seed Leylah Fernandez[99] and sixth seedDiana Shnaider[100] to reach the final at thePan Pacific Open, where she overcame wildcard entrantSofia Kenin in straight sets to claim her third title of the year and clinch a place at theWTA Finals for the first time in her career.[101][102]

At the WTA Finals in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, Zheng lost her opening group match against Sabalenka[103] but then defeated Elena Rybakina[104] and Jasmine Paolini[105] to reach the semifinals where she overcame Barbora Krejčíková, in straight sets.[106][107] She lost the final toCoco Gauff in a match which went to a third set tiebreak.[108] Despite the defeat, Zheng reached a career-high ranking of world No. 5 following the tournament.[109]

2025: Italian Open semifinal, elbow surgery

Seeded fifth at theAustralian Open, Zheng defeated qualifierAnca Todoni,[110] before losing in the second round toLaura Siegemund.[111] She then lost her opening matches at theQatar Ladies Open to Ons Jabeur[112] and at theDubai Championships againstPeyton Stearns.[113]

Wins over Viktoria Azarenka,[114]Lulu Sun[115] andMarta Kostyuk[116] saw Zheng reach the quarterfinals atIndian Wells, before her run was halted by second seed Iga Świątek.[117]

She overcameLauren Davis,[118]Taylor Townsend,[119] and Ashlyn Krueger[120] to reach the quarterfinals at theMiami Open, where she lost to world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka.[121]

Zheng at the2025 Miami Open

At theCharleston Open, Zheng made it three quarterfinals in as many tournaments with wins over Maria Sakkari[122] andElise Mertens,[123] before losing in the last eight to ninth seedEkaterina Alexandrova.[124]

Having lost her opening match at theMadrid Open to Anastasia Potapova,[125] Zheng overcameOlga Danilović,[126] 26th seedMagdalena Fręch[127] andBianca Andreescu[128] to reach the quarterfinals at theItalian Open, where she defeated world No. 1, Aryna Sabalenka, for the first time, after losing their previous six meetings.[129] She lost in the semifinals to fourth seed Coco Gauff in a match which went to a deciding third set tiebreak.[130] Zheng reached the quarterfinals at theFrench Open, losing to Aryna Sabalenka.[131]

At theQueen's Club Championships in London, Zheng made it through to her first grass-court semifinal,[132] which she lost to Amanda Anisimova, in three sets.[133] Seeded fifth, she went out in the first round atWimbledon at the hands ofKateřina Siniaková.[134]

On 19 July, Zheng announced she had undergone surgery on her right elbow the previous day and would be out of action for an unspecified amount of time, saying on social media that she had been dealing with "persistent pain" in the joint "over the past months" and the procedure was a "necessary step toward a better version of myself on court."[135][136]

Zheng made her return to WTA Tour in the last week of September at theChina Open where, as seventh seed, she received a bye and then defeated qualifierEmiliana Arango to reach the third round.[137] There, she retired while trailing in the third set against 26th seed Linda Nosková due to an issue with her recently operated upon elbow.[138] Zheng subsequently withdrew from theWuhan Open.,[139] the Ningbo Open and the Toray Pan Pacific.

Personal life

Zheng has citedLi Na—the only Chinese player to win a singles major title—as a source of inspiration.[5][140] In 2024, Zheng said: "I watched her since I was a little kid so I'm trying to follow in her steps. She inspired me a lot when I was a child."[141] Zheng has also credited her parents' support and guidance as a reason for her success.[140]

Following her gold medal win at the 2024 Summer Olympics, Zheng said that she had always wanted "to become one of the Asians that can inspire young kids and make them love tennis more".[142][143] She also said she looked up toLiu Xiang, a Chinesehurdler whose win in the110-meter hurdles at the2004 Summer Olympics was China's first gold in any men's track and field event.[142][140] In a 2024 interview withSky Sports, Zheng said her hobbies include walking with her family, reading, and singing.[144] She also enjoysroller coaster rides and is a fan of the K-pop groupBlackpink.[145][146]
