Zeta Pegasi orζ Pegasi, formally namedHomam (/ˈhmæm/),[12][13] is a single[14]star in the northernconstellation ofPegasus. With anapparent visual magnitude of +3.4,[2] this star is bright enough to be seen with thenaked eye and is one of thebrighter members of Pegasus.Parallax measurements place it at a distance of around 204light-years (62.7parsecs) from theSun.[1]

Nomenclature

ζ Pegasi (Latinised toZeta Pegasi) is the star'sBayer designation.

It bore the traditional nameHomam, meaning "Man of High Spirit" or "Lucky Star of High Minded". In 2016, theInternational Astronomical Union organized aWorking Group on Star Names (WGSN)[15] to catalogue and standardize proper names for stars. The WGSN approved the nameHomam for this star on 21 August 2016 and it is now so entered in the IAU Catalog of Star Names.[13]

InChinese,雷電 (Léi Diàn), meaningThunder and Lightning, refers to an asterism consisting ζ Pegasi,ξ Pegasi,σ Pegasi,55 Pegasi,66 Pegasi and70 Pegasi.[16] Consequently, theChinese name for ζ Pegasi itself is雷電一 (Léi Diàn yī), "the First Star of Thunder and Lightning".[17]

This star has astellar classification of B8 V,[3] which identifies it as a largeB-type main sequence star that is generating energy through thenuclear fusion of hydrogen at its core. The radius of this star is about four times that of the Sun.[7] In 2007, John H. Goebel showed that Zeta Pegasi is a variable star, using data obtained fromGravity Probe B.[4] It is aslowly pulsating B star that varies slightly in luminosity with a period of22.952±0.804 hours, completing 1.04566 cycles per day.[4] Zeta Pegasi is about 120[10] million years old and is rotating rapidly with aprojected rotational velocity in the range of140[9] to 210[10] km/s. Theeffective temperature of itsouter envelope is around12,300 K,[7] giving it the characteristic blue-white glow of aB-type star.[18]

Zeta Pegasi has been examined forinfrared excess that may indicate the presence of circumstellar matter, but none was found.[19] This star does have twooptical companions. The first is a magnitude 11.6 star at anangular separation of68 arcseconds along aposition angle of 139°, as of 1997.[4] The second is an 11th magnitude star at a separation of177 arcseconds with a position angle of 5°.[5] Zeta Pegasi is not known to be a member of astellar association.[19]
