Zahid Hamid[a] (born 24 October 1947) is a Pakistani politician, and lawyer. A member ofPakistan Muslim League (Nawaz), Hamid previously served as theMinister for Law and Justice and Minister of Climate Change in theThird Sharif ministry[1][3] between 2015 and 2017. He briefly served as the Minister of Law and Justice in June 2013 before being appointed Minister of Science and Technology from June 2013 to November 2014. He again served as Minister for Law and Justice under Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi from August 2017 until he resigned in November 2017.

Hamid had been a member of theNational Assembly of Pakistan from 2002 to May 2018.

Family and education

Hamid was born on 24 October 1947 inLahore,Punjab,[4][1] to Hamid Nawaz, a two-time MNA[5] who served in thePakistan Army and retired as aBrigadier in 1975 and later served inforeign service tenured as diplomat in various countries.[6]

Hamid's brotherShahid Hamid, served asGovernor of Punjab in 1997 and was senior leader inPakistan Muslim League.[6]

After graduating from local school, Hamid attended thePunjab University where he studied law. In 1971, he graduated with aLLB. For higher studies, Hamid went to theUnited Kingdom to attend theCambridge University.[1] He graduated with aBA withhonours in Philosophy and worked on the post-graduate studies. He gained aMA degree where his work contained the fundamentals ofphilosophy of law.[1] Reportedly, he received his BA Honours and MA from Cambridge University.[4]

In addition, Hamid has attended the seminars onmanagement at theBusiness school of theHarvard University; and further specialised in law fromInternational Development Law Organization based in Rome, Italy.[1]

He is a lawyer by profession.[4]

Political career

In 1970, Hamid passed theCSS exam to join theCentral Superior Services (CSS) where he worked with theprovincial government ofPunjab but resigned in 1978 from theCSS to start career in politics. He set up and managed two industrial units in the food sector from 1978 to 1988.[1]

Hamid started his career as professional lawyer and eventually becoming a senior advocate at the Supreme Court of Pakistan.[1]

In the 1990s, he established theEnvironmental Protection Agency authorised by Prime MinisterNawaz Sharif in 1997 and appointed the firstDirector-General of theEnvironmental Protection Agency until being dismissed by GeneralPervez Musharraf after staging aself-coup in 1999.[1]

He ran for the seat of National Assembly in 1997 election as PPP candidate but was unsuccessful.[5]

Following themilitary takeover, Hamid defected to thePML(N)'ssplinter group led byShuja'at Hussain, and successfully participated inNA-114 constituency during thegeneral elections held nationwide in 2002.[5][7] From 2004 to 2007, he tenured asMinister of State forDefence,Investment andPrivatization; in 2008, he had been elevated as theMinister for Law.[1][3][8][9][10][5]

In 2008, Hamid joined thePML(N).[7][11] Between 2008 and 2013, he was active member of the PML-N in National Assembly when the party was in opposition.[5]

In 2013, Hamid participated in the2013 Pakistani general elections and elected as member of National Assembly from his constituencyNA-114. He was appointedLaw Minister in theMinistry of Law, Justice and Human Rights, but later he was reassigned toScience ministry.[12]Due to the treason trial ofPervez Musharraf. Hamid abruptly resigned from theScience ministry after the special court inducted him on aMusharraf treason trial.[7][9][12][13][14][15] On hearing the court's decision, Hamid tendered his resignation to Prime MinisterNawaz Sharif.[7][16][17]

In November 2015 he was made Minister of Climate Change[18] and in 2016, Hamid was given the additional portfolio of the Minister of Law and Justice.[13] He had ceased to hold ministerial office in July 2017 when the federal cabinet was disbanded following the disqualification of Prime MinisterNawaz Sharif by theSupreme Court of Pakistan inPanama Papers case decision.[19] Following the election of Shahid Khaqan Abbasi as Prime Minister of Pakistan in August 2017, he was inducted into the federal cabinet ofAbbasi.[20][21] He was appointed federal Minister of Law and Justice.[22][23] He stepped down from the ministerial office of Minister for Law and Justice in November 2017, following the2017 Tehreek-e-Labaik protest.[24][25]
