Zach Hadel (/ˈheɪdəl/HAY-dəl;[4]), known by his pseudonympsychicpebbles, is an AmericanYouTuber, animator, writer, director, and voice actor. He andMichael Cusack are the co-creators and co-stars of theAdult Swim animated seriesSmiling Friends. He is also known for hisInternet animations and for being a co-host of theLet's Play web seriesOneyPlays.
Hadel grew up inKansas[1][5] and began his animation career by uploadingAdobe Flash animations toNewgrounds, later transitioning toYouTube.[6] He enrolled in college to learngraphic design, but immediately dropped out before attending any classes.[7] A self-taught animator, Hadel has stated that shows such asSpongeBob SquarePants,The Simpsons,Dragon Ball Z,Beavis and Butt-Head, andSouth Park inspired his animation style.[8]
His short-form independent cartoons became popular online, such as his animated video responding to overuse of the "arrow in the knee" meme fromThe Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim which went viral in 2011.[9] Along with fellow Newgrounds animatorChris O'Neill, Hadel created the popular web cartoon seriesHellbenders featuring exaggerated versions of O'Neill and himself, which was picked up for apilot by Adult Swim but ultimately not pursued after several years indevelopment hell.[10][11][12] Hadel also collaborated with O'Neill to make a short animated video parodying theKony 2012 documentary; the video went viral, receiving over 1.7 million views within its first weekend.[13] Hadel was a member of the YouTube groupSleepyCabin and co-hostedSleepyCast, a comedy and discussion podcast hosted by former Newgrounds animators that launched on August 30, 2014. As of April 2024[update], his YouTube channelpsychicpebbles has 1.6 million subscribers and 222.28 million views.[14]
Hadel animated a segment ofSeth Rogen's Hilarity for Charity withJustin Roiland, co-creator ofRick and Morty. Roiland later appraised the animation as his most transgressive joke.[15] Hadel and Roiland also appeared alongside animatorAlex Hirsch onh3h3's livestream podcast for charity[16] where they raised over $100,000 forCaliforniawildlife relief.[17]
Hadel hosted the podcastSchmucks from 2017 to 2019, where he interviewed fellow entertainers such asMichael Stevens,Finn Wolfhard,Jon Jafari, andEthan Klein.[18]
In 2018, Hadel storyboarded forSpongeBob SquarePants for theseason 11 episode "The Grill is Gone".[19]
On April 1, 2020,Cartoon Network's late-nightAdult Swim block premiered the pilot episode of Hadel and Australian animatorMichael Cusack's animated adult television series,Smiling Friends.[20] The series follows Pim and Charlie, two employees of the titularnonprofit organization missioned with making people smile.[21] The series premiered with a full season marathon on January 9, 2022, and later debuted onHBO Max.[22][23] Adult Swim announced that the show would be renewed for a second season on February 9, 2022.[24] Adult Swim renewed the show for a third season on June 13th, 2024.[25]
