Yve-Alain Bois (born April 16, 1952) is a professor emeritus of Art History at the School of Historical Studies at theInstitute for Advanced Study inPrinceton, New Jersey.
Bois received anM.A. from theÉcole Pratique des Hautes Études in 1973 for his work onEl Lissitzky's typography, and aPh.D. from theÉcole des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales in 1977 for his work onLissitzky's andMalevich's conceptions of space.[1] Both of his degrees were supervised underRoland Barthes.
Bois is a professor emeritus at the School of Historical Studies at theInstitute for Advanced Study inPrinceton, New Jersey, in the chair inaugurated byErwin Panofsky,[1] and at theEuropean Graduate School. From 1991 to 2005, he served on the faculty atHarvard University asJoseph Pulitzer Jr. Professor in Modern Art,[2] after teaching atJohns Hopkins University and at theCentre National de la Recherche Scientifique.[1][3]
Bois was elected to theAmerican Philosophical Society in 2016.[4]
Bois has written books and articles on artists of Europeanmodernism. He is an editor of the journalOctober.
