Yusif Yakubu (born 4 September 1976) is a Ghanaian former professionalfootballer who played as aforward.[1] He scored a total of 148I-League goals from 2000 to 2014,[2] and is regarded as one of the best foreigners in history offootball in India.[3][4][5]

Career

Yakubu was born inKumasi,Ashanti Region, in 1976, and began his youth football career in Ghanaian sideHearts of Oak in 1997. He later moved toEgyptian Premier League sideAl Ahly SC in 1998 and played until 2000, before settling in Indian clubs permanently.[6]

Before joiningKingfisher East Bengal,[7] he had played for theI-League clubsChurchill Brothers[8][9][10] andMahindra United.[11] From 2001 to 2005, he scored 65 goals in 103 league matches with Churchill Brothers, finishingNational Football League's top scorer twice.[12][13][14] He scored his first NFC hat-trick with Churchill on 5 March 2004 againstIndian Bank RC in a 4–1 win.[15] In one season with Mahindra United,[16] he wonFederation Cup and NFL.[17]

WithEast Bengal, Yakubu formed an impressive partnership withBhaichung Bhutia,[18] and scored nine goals in the2008–09 I-League.[19][20] He was part of the team's friendly matches of Myanmar tour, againstMyanmar National League teams, in which they won two, drew one and lost one.[21]

He is one of the all-time top scorer in Indian League and has scored 100 goals in the top tier of Indian football.[22] On 26 May 2010, left East Bengal Club and signed forSalgaocar SC.[23][24] From 2011 to 2012, he appeared withPrayag United and was in the squad that emerged as runners-up of2012 IFA Shield.[25][26][27] He is considered as one of the finest foreign football players in the history of Indian Club football.[28]

In 2012, he moved toMumbai FC and withthe Mumbaikars, he scored his first hat-trick inI-League againstChurchill Brothers in a 4–2 win on 13 April 2014.[29] In the[30]2014–15 I-League season, they managed to acquire sixth position.[31][32]

In January 2016, Yakubu moved to anotherKolkata-based sideMohammedan Sporting.[33]

On 7 August 2017, it was announced that Yakubu would return to India to sign forChurchill Brothers for theirGoa Professional League campaign.[34]
