TheYork News-Times is a daily newspaper published inYork,Nebraska. It is the newspaper of record forYork County and surrounding counties in theRainwater Basin region.

History

[edit]

In the late 1800s, York fielded a number of newspapers. On January 1, 1883, theYork Democrat was created from a previous paper known as theYork Tribune, established in 1872. TheYork Republican was another newspaper that flourished during this time period and was notable for its large circulation.[5] By the early 1900s, a series of mergers resulted in theYork News-Times becoming the last surviving newspaper from the local media boom period.[3]

In 1995, the newspaper's longtime owner,Stauffer Communications, was sold toMorris Communications.[6] In 2007, Morris sold theNews-Times and several other newspapers toGateHouse Media.[7] TheNews-Times and its nearby sister paper,The Grand Island Independent, were sold to theOmaha World-Herald in 2008;[6] theWorld-Herald and its subsidiary papers were purchased byBerkshire Hathaway in 2011.

In 2020, Berkshire Hathaway sold the newspaper and 30 other daily papers toLee Enterprises as part of a $140 million cash deal.[8]

Modern era

[edit]

Although print circulation is still below 3,500, the combination of print and digital readership means theNews-Times is currently experiencing the most readership in its history. Its website has won the Nebraska Press Association award for "Best Newspaper Website" five times.[3]

In the concern overfake news websites stemming from the2016 United States presidential election, theYork News-Times was sometimes mistakenly cited as a "fake newspaper," largely due to its name being similar to that of the well-knownNew York Times.[9]

Among the journalists who have worked at the paper isPulitzer Prize-winnerJeff Zeleny.
