Yo-Yo Rodriguez first appeared inThe Mighty Avengers #13 (July 2008) and was created by writerBrian Michael Bendis and artistAlex Maleev.[2][3] Born in Puerto Rico, she is the daughter of the supervillainJohn "Johnny" Horton. Through her father's mutated DNA, she gained superhuman speed and the ability to snap back to the exact same spot she started running.[4][5] Following theSecret Invasion event, taking on the name Slingshot, she was one of the members ofNick Fury's black-ops team called theSecret Warriors, which was written by Bendis andJonathan Hickman.[5] During this run, both her arms were cut off byHydra memberGorgon, and were later replaced with two prosthetic arms.[5][4]
Both of her arms were severed bythe Gorgon and she was temporarily unable to remain active with the team.[9] Both arms are later replaced with prosthetics.[10] With her new arms, she returns to active duty.[11]
Slingshot is believed to have been killed in a confrontation with theWrecking Crew.[12]
Slingshot can run at superhuman speed and bounces back to the point where she began.[13][14] She has been trained byNick Fury in espionage, hand-to-hand combat, and firearms. Her primary weapon is a bo staff.
Elena "Yo-Yo" Rodriguez appears inAgents of S.H.I.E.L.D., portrayed byNatalia Cordova-Buckley.[19][20] This version is a street-wise ColombianInhuman whose abilities last the duration of one heartbeat.[20] Introduced in thethird season episode "Bouncing Back", she comes into contact withS.H.I.E.L.D. when they investigate her for stealing weapons from theNational Police of Colombia's corrupt members after they kill her cousin Francisco. She grows close toMack, who nicknames her "Yo-Yo" due to her powers,[21] and eventually agrees to join S.H.I.E.L.D.'s Secret Warriors to help them fightHive's forces.[22] After signing theSokovia Accords, Rodriguez returned to her life with occasional monitoring by S.H.I.E.L.D.[23] before returning to the team after encountering theWatchdogs and pursuing a relationship with Mack in thefourth season.[24] In thefifth season,Hydra agent Ruby Hale slices off Rodriguez's forearms,[25] but the latter survives and eventually receives robotic prosthetic arms developed by her colleagueLeo Fitz,[26] though they initially interfere with her powers due to the messages being sent between her brain and arms not moving fast enough until Fitz fixes the problem.[27][28] Upon learning Ruby had infused herself withgravitonium, Rodriguez becomes involved in the field to kill her before she can destroy the world with her unstable powers.[29] In theseventh season,Jemma Simmons develops new bionic prosthetics made to resemble her original arms so Rodriguez can work undercover amidst their team's efforts to stop theChronicoms before they can erase S.H.I.E.L.D. from history. Eventually, Rodriguez realizes that she has been holding herself back and unlocks her powers' full potential, allowing her to move at speed without snapping back to where she started.[30] As of theseries finale, Rodriguez has become one of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s top agents.[31]
