History

[edit]

The Ynys Môn Island Games Association were founder members of theInternational Island Games Association in 1985 allowing the island to compete from the inaugural1985 Island Games held on the Isle of Man.[1]

A five-a-side youth football tournament was held at the inaugural games in 1985 held inDouglas, Isle of Man – in which Ynys Môn took the silver medal[2] – but football was completely absent from the programme at the1987 Island Games held inGuernsey.[3]

Ynys Môn made its debut in themen's football competition on 6 June 1989, losing 6–0 to theFaroe Islands. However, they would go on to claim the silver medal after winning their remaining three matches.[4]

They retained their silver medal at the1991 Island Games inÅland. After winning all three of their group games, they faced the Faroe Islands in the gold medal match but lost 2–0 to the defending champions.[5]

Ynys Môn were eliminated in the group stages at the1993 Island Games on theIsle of Wight, finishing sixth overall.[6] At the1995 Island Games inGibraltar, they missed out on a semi-final place on goal difference by a single goal and once again finished sixth overall.[7]

They returned to the medal podium at the1997 Island Games inJersey. Ynys Môn won their group undefeated to advance to the gold medal match. For the third time, they took home silver after losing 1–0 to hostsJersey.[8]

At the1999 Island Games inGotland, Ynys Môn advanced to the semi-finals in unusual circumstances. They drew both group matches 1–1 againstRhodes andGuernsey but finished as group winners on goals scored after Rhodes and Guernsey had played out a goalless draw. They defeated theIsle of Wight 3–1 in the semi-finals to advance to the gold medal match. Ynys Môn won the gold medal for the first time after defeating theIsle of Man 1–0.[9]

As defending champions at the2001 Island Games on theIsle of Man, Ynys Môn again reached the gold medal match. However, they were unable to successfully defend their title and took home a fourth silver medal as they lost 3–1 onpenalties to Guernsey.[10]

Ynys Môn were eliminated in the group stages at the2003 Island Games in Guernsey, finishing fifth overall.[11] A similar fate befel them at the2005 Island Games inShetland as they again finished fifth overall.[12]

At the2007 Island Games inRhodes, Ynys Môn recorded their worst ever result at the Island Games. After being eliminated in the group stage, they lost 6–1 in their placement play-off match againstMenorca to finish 11th and last overall.[13]

Ynys Môn missed the2009 Island Games held inÅland[14] but returned for the2011 Island Games held on theIsle of Wight. However, they were again eliminated at the group stage and finished ninth overall.[15]

Ynys Môn also missed the2013 Island Games inBermuda[16] but returned for the2015 Island Games in Jersey. Another group stage elimination followed and they finished eighth overall.[17] A similar run followed at the2017 Island Games inGotland as they again finished eighth overall.[18]

Angelsey hosted the2019 Inter Games Football Tournament – a replacement for the2019 Island Games which did not have football on the programme due to a lack of facilities inGibraltar. Ynys Môn won all three of their group stage matches to advance to the semi-finals. A 2–1 win againstShetland saw them into the final. Ynys Môn defeated Guernsey by the same scoreline to win the tournament[19]

They returned for the2023 Island Games inGuernsey. Ynys Môn reached the gold medal match for the sixth time but a 5–2 loss to Jersey followed as they claimed a fifth silver medal.[20]
