Yarrabilba is alocality in theCity of Logan,Queensland, Australia.[2][3] In the2021 census, Yarrabilba had a population of 10,240 people.[1]

Geography

As of March 2024, Yarrabilba consists of ten (10) neighbourhoods; The Avenues, Birnam Views, Mallee Pocket, Oak Leaf, The Parks, The Retreat, Sandstone Ridge, Sunrise Crossing, Vista, and Wickham Rise.[4]

The Darlington Parklands are located between the Oak Leaf and Vista neighbourhoods on the corner of Darlington Drive and Yarrabilba Drive.[5]

History

Before European settlement, which began around 1862, the land was occupied by the Wangerriburra Clan of theYugambeh language group. The nameYarrabilba comes from theWangerriburra/Bundjalung language forplace of song. The area contained twobora rings where ceremonies involving singing took place.[2]

TheBeaudesert railway line passing through the area toCanungra operated from 1915 to 1955.[6]

DuringWorld War II the military training baseCamp Cable was built between Logan Village and Tamborine, and included much of the land now part of Yarrabilba.[7]

Formerly in theShire of Beaudesert, Yarrabilba became part ofLogan City following the local government amalgamations in March 2008.

In 2010, it was announced that Yarrabilba would be the location for a future city which is expected to contain 20,000 dwellings housing up to 50,000 people.[8] Two other new urban centres were to be established atGreater Flagstone also in Logan City andEcco Ripley in theCity of Ipswich.[citation needed]

In 2011, development began for the new urban precinct.[9]Lend-Lease was granted approval for the development of the first 93.2-hectare (230-acre) stage of the project.[citation needed]

On 28 November 2014, a portion of Yarrabilba was excised to create a new locality,Kairabah.[2][10]

St Clare's Catholic Primary School opened in 2017.[11][12]

Yarrabilba State School opened on 1 January 2018.[13][14]

Yarrabilba State Secondary College opened on 1 January 2020.[13][15]

San Damiano College opened in 2021, initially offering Year 7 schooling.[16]

Demographics

In the2016 census, Yarrabilba had a population of 3,580 people.[17]

In the2021 census, Yarrabilba had a population of 10,240 people.[1]

Yarrabilba State School is a government primary school (Prep to Year 6) for boys and girls at 1 Darnell Street (27°48′13″S153°06′53″E / 27.8036°S 153.1146°E /-27.8036; 153.1146 (Yarrabilba State School)).[18][19] It includes aspecial education program.[18] In 2018, the school had an enrolment of 470 students with 35 teachers (34 full-time equivalent) and 21 non-teaching staff (16 full-time equivalent).[20] In February 2020, it had an enrolment of approximately 850 students.[21][14]

St Clare's Primary School is a Catholic primary (Prep-6) school for boys and girls at 2 Combs Street (27°48′20″S153°06′31″E / 27.8055°S 153.1087°E /-27.8055; 153.1087 (St Clare's Primary School)).[18][22][23][24] In 2017, the school had an enrolment of 120 students with 12 teachers (11 full-time equivalent) and 11 non-teaching staff (6 full-time equivalent).[25][24][26] In 2018, the school had an enrolment of 166 students with 19 teachers (16 full-time equivalent) and 15 non-teaching staff (10 full-time equivalent).[20]

Yarrabilba State Secondary College is a government secondary (Years 7-12) school for boys and girls at 22-60 McKinnon Drive (27°48′31″S153°07′17″E / 27.8087°S 153.1213°E /-27.8087; 153.1213 (Yarrabilba Secondary College)).[27] At the end of 2020 (its first year of operation with only Year 7-8 students), it had an enrolment of 277 students.[28]

San Damiano College is a Catholic secondary (Years 7-12) school for boys and girls at 980-1040 Yarrabilba Drive (27°48′34″S153°07′02″E / 27.8095°S 153.1171°E /-27.8095; 153.1171 (San Damiano College)).[29]
