TheYan Mountains, also known by theirChinese nameYanshan,[a] are a majormountain range to the north of theNorth China Plain, principally in theprovince ofHebei.
The range rises between theChaobai River on the west and theShanhai Pass on the east. It consists mostly oflimestone,granite, andbasalt. Its altitude ranges from 400 to 1000 meters. The main peak,Mount Wuling, is 2,116 meters (6,942 ft) abovesea level and is located inXinglong County in Hebei. The range contains many narrow passes, such as theGubei Pass, theXifeng Pass, and theLeng Pass. The eastern stretch of theGreat Wall of China, includingBadaling in northernBeijing, can be found in the Yan Mountains. The mountains are also an important traffic gateway between the north and south.
