Yamada bugyō (山田奉行) were officials of theTokugawa shogunate with responsibilities as an official representatives of the shogunate inIse.[1]
Conventional interpretations have construed theseJapanese titles as "commissioner", "overseer" or "governor".[2]
The Tokugawa placed abugyō atIse, also known asUjiyamada; and the main function of this official was to supervise pilgrims and shrines in the area;[3] and thesebakufu officials served as a magistrates for resolving civil disputes, amongst other duties.
