Xingtianosaurus is an extinctgenus ofoviraptorosauriantheropoddinosaur that lived in what is nowChina during theEarly Cretaceous. The type and only species,X. ganqi, was named and described in 2019.[1] It was placed in theCaudipteridae, alongsideCaudipteryx andSimilicaudipteryx.[2][3][4]
Theholotype specimen ofXingtianosaurus ganqi,IVPP V13390, was recovered in the Dakangpu Beds of theYixian Formation inLiaoning Province,China.[1] The nameXingtianosaurus refers toXingtian, a Chinesedeity who continued to fight after beingdecapitated. This name references the skull-less holotype. Theepithetganqi refers to the weapon, a battle axe, that Xingtian wielded.[1]
The holotype specimen is almost complete, missing only theskull, several vertebrae and thecoracoids.[1]
