"X" is a song by American singerPoppy. It was released on October 25, 2018 byMad Decent as the fifth and final single from her second studio albumAm I a Girl? (2018). The song was written by Poppy,Titanic Sinclair, Chris Greatti and the producerZakk Cervini. Musically, the song exploresheavy metal, a musical departure for Poppy at the time.

The song and Poppy's new direction in music were positively reviewed by critics. Its music video was inspired by the 1976 filmCarrie.[1] It later became the official theme song forNXT TakeOver: Phoenix the following January, and an acoustic version was released during the same month.[2]

Background and composition

[edit]

Poppy released her second studio albumAm I a Girl? on October 31, 2018. The album mainly features anelectro-pop sound and was also preceded by fourpop singles. "X" was released asAm I a Girl?'s fifth single few days before the album's release.[3] The music video followed on November 5.[4] An acoustic version of "X" was released on Poppy's YouTube channel on January 8, 2019, and was later released for digital streaming on January 17.[5]

"X" has been described by critics as aheavy metal,[4]nu metal[6] andpower pop[7] song. Similar to "Play Destroy", her collaboration withGrimes, "X" explores heavier territory, with Poppy describing both tracks as a new genre called "Poppymetal".[8] "X" features "contradicting verses and melodies", with heavy metal parts in which the singer "begs to be made bloody" and peaceful sections with harmonies where she sings about wanting to "love everyone".[4] The song is in the key of F♯ minor with a BPM of 114.[9][unreliable source?]

Reception

[edit]

Andy Hill fromGigwise states: "It's a masterpiece. So much packed in – the legitdeath metal, theretro-horror shoutouts, the note-perfect peace and love hippy interludes. It's her 'Bohemian Rhapsody'. High art for the Ritalin generation."[10]

Anna Fair fromAlternative Press states: "While the peaceful verses are accompanied by delightful harmonies and a scene right out of the '60s, the immediate scene following is dark. Heavy metal guitars back Poppy's vocals, and she gets her wish ['please get me bloody']."[4]
