Wu Yibing (Chinese:吴易昺;pinyin:Wú Yìbǐng;Mandarin pronunciation:[ǔ î pìŋ];[4] born 14 October 1999) is a Chinese professionaltennis player.[5] Wu is the first Chinese player in theOpen Era to reach and to win anATP Tour-level singles final, doing so at the2023 Dallas Open.[1] He has been ranked as high as No. 54 by theATP, which he first achieved on 29 May 2023, making him the third highest-ranked male Chinese player in history, behindZhang Zhizhen andShang Juncheng.[1] He also has a career-high doubles ranking of world No. 295, achieved on 23 April 2018.[6] He is currently the No. 6 Chinese player.[7]
Wu became the world No. 1 in theITF Junior Circuit ranking[8] after winning the boys' singles title at the2017 US Open.
Wu representedChina at the 2017Davis Cup, where he has a win/loss record of 1–0. He defeatedJason Jung in his first Davis Cup match.
In December 2016, Wu reached the final of the2016 Orange Bowl, a Grade-A junior event, losing toMiomir Kecmanović in the final.
In 2017, Wu reached the semifinals in both boys'singles anddoubles at theAustralian Open, and won both the boys'singles anddoubles champions (with Chinese Taipei'sHsu Yu-hsiou) at theUS Open, thus became the first Chinese male to win a Grand Slam title.[9]
In September 2017 he made his ATP debut at the2017 Chengdu Open as a wildcard.In October 2017 he made his Masters debut at theShanghai Masters as a wildcard.
In 2018, Wu recorded his first ATP win againstLi Zhe at theShanghai Masters. In the second round, he won the first set againstKei Nishikori.[10]
He did not compete from March 2019 to December 2021 due to injury.
In 2022, he won three Challenger titles in the United States, including back-to-back trophy runs in July inRome, Georgia andIndianapolis, Indiana. As a result, he reached the top 200 at a career-high of No. 174, on 25 July 2022.[11] His four career total Challenger titles made him the most decorated Chinese player in the circuit's history.[12]
At theUS Open he qualified to make his Grand Slam debut.[13] He became the first male Chinese in theOpen Era to qualify at the US Open, winning his last qualifying match beforeZhang Zhizhen also won his last match later in the same day.[14][15][16][17] Wu won his first round match against 31st seedNikoloz Basilashvili, becoming the first male Chinese player to win a US Open match in theOpen era and a Grand Slam match in 63 years since Mei Fu Chi at Wimbledon 1959.[18][19] He beat fellow qualifierNuno Borges in five sets in the second round to become the first Chinese male player to reach the third round of any Grand Slam event sinceKho Sin-Kie in1946 Wimbledon. He also became the first Chinese man ever to reach the third round in the tournament history (since 1881).[20][21] As a result, he moved 43 positions up to world No. 131 in the rankings on 12 September 2022. He then lost to world No. 1,Daniil Medvedev, in the third round.
He finished his year ranked No. 119, 1000 spots higher than his ranking at the end of the 2021 season.
Wu started his season playing the firstAdelaide International, where, in qualifying, he defeatedUgo Humbert but lost toAlexei Popyrin. He received a wildcard into the2023 Australian Open, where he lost toCorentin Moutet in the first round.[22]
Following a final showing in theCleveland Challenger, Wu made his debut in the top 100, at world No. 97 on 6 February 2023, becoming the second Chinese male player to do so afterZhang Zhizhen four months earlier.[23][24]
InDallas, Wu defeatedMichael Mmoh in the first round, then claimed the biggest win of his career by defeating third seedDenis Shapovalov in the second round to reach his firstATP Tour-level quarterfinal.[25] He then beatAdrian Mannarino to become the first Chinese player sincePan Bing in1995 to reach an ATP Tour-level semifinal, and only the second ever player from China to do so.[26] By defeating top seed and world No. 8Taylor Fritz in the semifinals, he became the first Chinese male ever to defeat a top 10 ranked player and to make an ATP Tour level final in theOpen Era.[27][28][29] He went one step further to win the title defeatingJohn Isner, after saving four championship points in the match, and become the first Chinese man in the Open Era to win an ATP Tour title. In doing so, he became the highest-ranked Chinese player in the history of the ATP rankings, and overtook Zhang to become the first Chinese player to enter the top 60 on 13 February 2023.[29][30] He received a wildcard for the2023 BNP Paribas Open where he defeatedJaume Munar for his first win at this tournament.[31] At the2023 Miami Open, he recorded also his first win at this Masters againstKyle Edmund.[1]
After losing in the first round ofBarcelona andMadrid, Wu won his first match on clay beatingRichard Gasquet inRome in three sets, before losing toFrancisco Cerúndolo in the second round. InGeneva, he reached his first quarterfinal on clay, after beatingMarc-Andrea Hüsler andMarco Cecchinato. He retired in his quarterfinal match againstAlexander Zverev. At theFrench Open, he lost toRoberto Bautista Agut in the first round. At the2023 Wimbledon Championships, he was beaten by tenth seedFrances Tiafoe.
Wu made his return from an injury that halted his 2023 season at the challenger inJinan, where despite being inactive for the majority of the season, he won the title, defeatingRio Noguchi in the final.[32]
He then received a wildcard for2024 Shanghai Masters, and defeatedSumit Nagal and 25th seedNicolás Jarry to become the second-ever Chinese man to reach the third round of Shanghai (afterZhizhen Zhang),[33] where he lost toCarlos Alcaraz.[34]
Wu Yibing won his sixth Challenger title at the2025 Texas Spine and Joint Championships in Tyler.[35]
