Wraith (Zak-Del) is a fictional character appearing inAmerican comic books published byMarvel Comics. Created byJavier Grillo-Marxuach andKyle Hotz, Wraith first appears in the prologue ofAnnihilation: Conquest as a vision,[1] with his first physical appearance being inAnnihilation Conquest: Wraith #1.[2]
Wraith first appeared inAnnihilation: Conquest: Wraith #1 (2007) and was created byJavier Grillo-Marxuach andKyle Hotz. Wraith returned inDonny Cates and Geoff Shaw's 2019 relaunch ofGuardians of the Galaxy.[3]
Wraith is the son ofKree scientist Sim-Del, who created a power source sufficient to "light an entire galaxy". The Kree banished him, but he continued his work, using the power source to turn a barrenplanetoid into a paradise. The Kree killed Sim-Del, his wife, and all traces of his work. However, his son, Zak-Del, was sent off on an escape ship. Zak-Del is later found and adopted by the Nameless, an offshoot of the Kree who were possessed by parasitic Exolons. Zak-Del becomes known as Wraith and seeks revenge against the Kree.[4]
InAnnihilation, Wraith is kidnapped byRonan the Accuser, who seeks to harness his power and infects him withPhalanx. After escaping, Wraith enlists the help ofSuper-Skrull and Praxagora to battle the Phalanx and absorbs the Phalanx-infectedSupreme Intelligence.[5] Praxagora is later possessed byUltron before Wraith uses the Exolon to purge him and the Phalanx-infected Kree.[6]
AfterGamora killsThanos inInfinity Wars, Wraith attends Thanos's funeral and witnessesStarfox showing all the guests a recording of Thanos stating that he uploaded his consciousness into a new body before his death. Wraith works with Starfox to findKnull, a deity who created theKlyntar and the Exolon, and remove the Exolon from his body.[7] Knull mortally wounds Wraith, but he learns that Knull has an opposite, a god of light, and travels to Earth to tellEddie Brock before dying.[8]
Wraith is an experienced fighter and possesses a polymorphic weapon which can take on a variety of forms, including a gun, a whip, a blade, and binoculars. As a Kree, Wraith possesses greater natural attributes than a human and resistance to disease, with the former being further enhanced by Exolon. By summoning swarms of Exolon, he can strike fear into his opponents and absorb souls.
Wraith appears inGuardians of the Galaxy, voiced byJeff Bennett.[9] This version seeks revenge againstGamora, who he blames for his father's death.
