InMandaeism, theWorld of Light orLightworld[1] (Classical Mandaic:ࡀࡋࡌࡀ ࡖࡍࡄࡅࡓࡀ,romanized: alma ḏ-nhūra), also theWorlds of Light (Classical Mandaic:ࡀࡋࡌࡉࡀ ࡖࡍࡄࡅࡓࡀ,romanized: almia ḏ-nhūra,Modern Mandaic pronunciation:[ˈalmidənˈhura]), is the primeval, transcendental world from whichTibil and theWorld of Darkness emerged.

Description

[edit]
  • The Great Life (Hayyi Rabbi or SupremeGod/Monad) is the ruler of the World of Light.
  • Countlessuthras dwell inškintas in the World of Light. (Aškinta is a celestial dwelling where uthras, or benevolent celestial beings, live in the World of Light.[2])
  • The World of Light is the source of the GreatYardna (Jordan River) of Life, also known asPiriawis.
  • Ether/Air (Classical Mandaic:ࡀࡉࡀࡓ,romanized: ayar), which can be thought of as heavenly breath or energy, permeates the World of Light.[2]
  • TheMšunia Kušṭa is a part of the World of Light considered to be the dwelling place of heavenly or ideal counterparts (dmuta).[1]
  • In someMandaean texts,Tarwan is a part of the World of Light that is described as a "pure land."[3]
  • Water flows from the World of Light toTibil viahapiqia miia, or cosmic streams of water, also known asHitpun.[4]: 215

Ascension

[edit]

When aMandaean person dies, priests perform elaborate death rituals or death masses calledmasiqta in order to help guide the soul (nišimta) towards the World of Light. In order to pass fromTibil (Earth) to the World of Light, the soul must go through multiplemaṭarta (watch-stations, toll-stations orpurgatories; see alsoAerial toll house,Arcs of Descent and Ascent, andAraf) before finally being reunited with thedmuta, the soul's heavenly counterpart.[2]

Parallels

[edit]

The idea has some parallels with theGnostic concept ofpleroma.
