InMandaeism, theWorld of Darkness (Classical Mandaic:ࡀࡋࡌࡀ ࡖࡄࡔࡅࡊࡀ,romanized: alma ḏ-hšuka) is theunderworld located belowTibil (Earth). It is ruled by its kingUr theLeviathan and its queenRuha, mother of theseven planets andtwelve constellations.

Description

The great darkSea of Suf lies in the World of Darkness.[1] The great dividing river ofHitpun, analogous to the riverStyx inGreek mythology, separates the World of Darkness from theWorld of Light.[2]Siniawis is one of the regions of the World of Darkness.[3]

TheGinza Rabba mention theAbaddons (ebdunia) as part of the World of Darkness. TheRight Ginza mentions the existence of the "upper Abaddons" (ebdunia ʿlaiia) as well as the "lower Abaddons" (ebdunia titaiia).[4]

The World of Darkness is sometimes referred to asSheol (šiul) in theGinza Rabba and otherMandaean scriptures.[4]
