Willie Anak Mongin is aMalaysianpolitician,software engineer andtechnopreneur who has served as theMember of Parliament (MP) forPuncak Borneo since May 2018. He served as theDeputy Minister of Plantation Industries and Commodities II for the second term in theBarisan Nasional (BN) administration under former Prime MinisterIsmail Sabri Yaakob and former MinisterZuraida Kamaruddin from August 2021 to the collapse of the BN administration in November 2022 and the first term in thePerikatan Nasional (PN) administration under former Prime MinisterMuhyiddin Yassin and former MinisterKhairuddin Razali from March 2020 to the collapse of the PN administration in August 2021. He is a member of theParti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB), a component party of the rulingGabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) coalition. He was a member ofPeople's Justice Party (PKR), a component party of thePakatan Harapan (PH) opposition coalition. He isBidayuh from Sarawak.

Education Background

Willie is a Certified Professional Marketer (CPM) Asia, which he obtained from the Institute of Marketing Malaysia (IMM) in December 2021. Driven by passion, he completed his Master of Business Administration (MBA) in Marketing at Putra Business School (PBS) under the Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) in December 2021. He also holds a Bachelor’s degree in Science (Hons) in Computing from Staffordshire University, United Kingdom. He is passionate about information technology, software development, digitalisation and big data analytics.

Working Experience

Prior to joining politics full-time, Willie’s early corporate exposure spanned across the Banking, Utilities, Plantations and Fast-Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) sectors, where he served more than 20 years under various roles in several organisations since he first joined in 1995. He then pursued his IT career as the Regional IT Manager with a European Multinational Company (MNC) in 2005 where he took charge of seven countries. Willie always believes in the power of Big Data, Artificial Intelligent (AI) could improve the quality of the database, predict outcomes, enhance the strategy of the decision-making process, and more in this ever-changing environment. With his entrepreneurism and extensive knowledge in the IT sector, Willie launched his software venture specialises in IT solutions and data intelligence services which add significant value to enterprise businesses across Malaysia. However in 2020, he resigned as the CEO of that company and served as Deputy Minister of Plantation Industries and Commodities till the collapse of the BN administration in November 2022.

Political career

1998 political movement

In the September 1998, Willie joined a political movement called the Social Justice Movement (Malay: Pergerakan Keadilan Sosial) (ADIL) as Volunteer and Reformist, he joined the movement because he was sympathised withAnwar Ibrahim. Willie only agreed to officially joinedPKR in 2009 after being persuaded by few top party leaders.

2011 Sarawak state election

In the2011 election, Willie under his party ofPeople's Justice Party (PKR) faced Jerip Susil ofBarisan Nasional and lost in a large majority.[1]

2013 general election

In the2013 election, Willie facedJames Dawos Mamit atMambong (now as Puncak Borneo) of PBB but losing again the parliamentary seat.

2016 Sarawak state election

In the2016 election, Willie faced Jerip Susil in winning for theMambong state seat and lost in a large majority.

2018 general election

In the2018 election, his party of PKR field him to contest the Puncak Borneo parliamentary seat again,[2] defeating the incumbent candidate Genot Sinel (giving PBB its first defeat in a parliament seat since 1974).

Parliamentary Incident

In 2018, during the debate on the motion to introduce the Sales and Services Tax (SST),Bung Moktar Radin was recounting the price of goods at markets and Willie uttered ‘Is it not casino, Kinabatangan?’ that was referring to recent photographs that went viral online, purportedly showing a person resembling Bung Moktar sitting at a table in a casino.

Bung Moktar then pointed his finger at Willie and accused Willie of being rude, demanding the statement be retracted and subsequently shouting "fuck you".[3]

In 2021, Willie was under fire afterBatu Kawan MPKasthuriraani Patto accused him of showing middle finger twice during the parliamentary session. Willie denied the accusations and said he will apologize if the accusations are true.[4]

Relations with the Local Community

Datuk Willie Mongin is a people's person and is active in solving problems faced by local residents regardless of race or religion. He often attends to give donations to the heirs of deceased villagers. He even represents his staff if he is busy and cannot attend.
