William Reibert Mapother Jr.[1] (/ˈmpɒθər/; born April 17, 1965) is an American actor, known for his role asEthan Rom on the television seriesLost and starring in the filmIn the Bedroom. He is also known for the filmAnother Earth.

Mapother was born inLouisville, Kentucky, the son of Louisa (née Riehm) and William Reibert Mapother Sr.[2] His father was an attorney and served as a judge in Louisville between 1967 and 1970. Mapother Jr. is a first cousin of actorTom Cruise, whose birth name is Thomas Cruise Mapother IV.

Career

Mapother has become widely known as acharacter actor, and sometimes plays scary or otherwise dark characters. He played a pivotal role inTodd Field'sIn the Bedroom, and is perhaps best known asEthan Rom in the TV showLost, which he played for 11 episodes during the life of the series.

Mapother has also had considerable roles in a series of independent films, such asThe Lather Effect,Moola,Hurt, andAnother Earth. Mapother starred inThe Burrowers as a Native American fighter who joins a posse to help find missing white settlers.

In September 2007, he was elected to a three-year term on the National Board of Directors for theScreen Actors Guild.

He has provided the motion capture work forAgent 47, the main character in the 2012 video gameHitman: Absolution and also provided the voice before series veteranDavid Bateson was recast. In 2014, he played the lead in the paranormal horror filmThe Atticus Institute.[3]

Awards

William Mapother received a nomination for a Gotham Award for the film In the Bedroom in 2001, but a search for a specific ACCA nomination in 2001 or an Actor Award for Outstanding Performance by the Cast of a Theatrical Motion Picture in 2002 for him did not yield results, though he did not win the Gotham Award.[4]
