Welcome toWikiProject Women in Red (WiR)!
Our objective is to turnred links intoblue ones. Our project's scope is women's representation on all language Wikipedias (biographies, women's works, women's issues, broadly construed). Did you know that, according toHumaniki, only20.23% of the English Wikipedia's biographies are about women? Not impressed?Content gender gap is a form ofsystemic bias, and this is what WiR addresses. We invite you to participate, whenever you like, in whatever way suits you and your schedule. Editors of all genders are equally and warmly welcome at Women in Red!

    Welcome!

This month, Women in Red is focusing on its tenth anniversary and on Kenya. We chose Kenya because it will be the location of this year's Wikimania. It's not our first editathon regarding Kenya. We did one some years back when Women in Red held a 24 hour editathon. Part of the editathon was hosted in Nairobi by Carol Mwaura and she is one of the co-authors of a paper that will be presented atm:WikiWomen* SummitWikiWomenSummit, a Wikimania Day 0 pre-conference.

By all means, donate an improved article or two but the challenge is "Ten forKenya": a new article for every year of Women in Red.

Below is a collection of a number of redlists that include lots of Kenyan women to write about. Feel free to have a look at these if you want to know where to get started. We hope both inexperienced and seasoned editors will join us in creating biographies and other articles about these notable women. By doing so, we think you will find some interesting insights into life in Kenya and its rich history. An updated/improved article is a very welcome contribution ... one or two might manage "Ten forKenya!"

As of 23 June 2025,according to Humaniki, there were 1,052 biographies of Kenyan women on English Wikipedia, in contrast to 2,309 of men and 8 for gender diverse Kenyans. This means that31.226% of Kenyan biographies are about women. Let's make this proportion higher!

The main goals of the event are:

    • to encourage inexperienced editors and show them how they can contribute to Wikipedia by creating biographies of prominent women

to draw the attention of more experienced editors to the need for concerted action in combating the systemic bias against the coverage of women and women's works

    • to promote the new and improved articles and images through social media

    What else?

    • Below, you'll see a section where you can list the articles you created this month and another section where you can add the images you have uploaded to Commons.
    • This essay on creating women's biographies and ourTen Simple Rules might be helpful to newer editors.
    • If you share any of the articles or images on social media, please indicate you have done so next to the article name.
    Thank you!

Redlists (lists of redlinked articles to be created)

    [edit]

A wide variety of redlink lists can be found on ourRedlist index, but the obvious one is thelist of Kenyan women in red and there are lots. Remember that this country had a long history before it became a British colony and there were missionaries from many countries.

There are a widevariety of dictionaries and other reference works available, some that editors might consider are:

    • Oxford Dictionary of National Biography (WD)
    • Dictionary of African Biography (WD)

    Other missing Kenyan women:

    • Alesandra Ogeta: Transgender rights activist and Director of Programs for Jinsiangu, a Kenyan organization supporting intersex, transgender, and gender non-conforming people. ([1][2])
    • Arya Jeipea Karijo: Women's rights and transgender rights activist ([3])
    • Angela Wamai: Kenyan filmmaker.
    • Susan Kinyua: Kenyan economist, winner of the 2024 Harambee Prize for the Advancement and Equality of African Women for her work in empowering African women.
    • Naomi Kipuri, Kenyan educator, development consultant ([4])
    • Lucy Mulekei, Kenyan community leader, co-founder of African Indigenous Women’s Organization ([5])
