Emblem of the United NationsWikiProject United Nations aims to improveUnited Nations related articles and facilitate cooperation between the United Nations and the Wikimedia movement. These pages provide a guide on what work can be done with simple guides on how to contribute so that everyone can take part. Simple instructions are provided for every task meaning people new to contributing to Wikimedia can take part.

The main goals of the project are to:

  1. Improve information on the United Nations, UN agencies and their programmes e.g. World Heritage Sites.
  2. Help navigate and organise sharing of United Nations media content, text and data on Wikimedia projects.

UN Media

UN agencies have releasedmedia content under aCreative Commons license compatible with Wikimedia, tools are provided to help contributors find uses for the content in multiple languages.

UN Text

UN agencies produceOpen access text publications and other documents under an open license, this text can copied into Wikimedia project pages e.g. Wikipedia articles.

UN references

The UN produces publications that can be used asreferences
  • References for Wikimedia projects e.g. Wikipedia articles
  • Sources of references of other works that the publications cite.
  • Sources for quotations.

Articles

Write and improveArticles related to the United Nations in as many languages as possible.

Translation

Translate existing articles and descriptions on Wikimedia project including Wikipedia, Wikivoyage and Wikimedia Commons .

Data

Add UNData to Wikidata, a free linked database, data from Wikidata is reused by Wikipedia, Google Search and others.

Discuss

Discuss: discuss the project and collaboration with United Nations agencies.

About Wikimedia

Wikimedia is a global movement whose mission is to bring free educational content to the world. Wikimedia is the collective name for the Wikimedia movement, revolving around a group of inter-related projects, including Wikipedia, Wikidata, Wikimedia Commons and others, which aim to use the collaborative power of the Internet, and thewiki concept, to create and share free knowledge of all kinds. Wikipedia is a project to build free encyclopedias in all languages of the world. Virtually anyone with Internet access is free to contribute neutral, cited information.

Wikidata aims to create a free knowledge base about the world that can be read and edited by humans and machines alike. It provides data in all the languages of the Wikimedia projects, and allows for the central access to data in a similar vein as Wikimedia Commons does for multimedia files.

Wikimedia Commons aims to provide a central repository for free photographs, diagrams, maps, videos, animations, music, sounds, spoken texts, and other free media. It is a multilingual project with contributors speaking dozens of languages.

Wikivoyage aims to create the world's largest free, complete and up-to-date worldwide travel guide. Wikivoyage was launched in January 2013 and is written by volunteers in the same spirit of sharing knowledge that makes travel so enjoyable.

Wikisource is a multilingual project to archive, transcribe and translate a collection of free and open content texts.
