It is not anencyclopedic article, nor one ofWikipedia's policies or guidelines; rather, its purpose is to explain certain aspects ofWikipedia:Citing sources. It may reflect differing levels ofconsensus andvetting.

Referencing is key to making Wikipedia reliable and trustworthy.

When working with references:
DO:
Useinline citations (footnotes orshortened footnotes).
Keep citationsnear the material they support, e.g. after the sentence.
Saywhere in the source the information came from.
Use aconsistent reference style within each article.
Consider usingcitation templates to create a consistent style.
Tagunder-sourced material with an appropriateinline tag.
Tagunder-sourced articles with an appropriateheader.
DON'T:
Don't rely onunreliable sources.
Don't cite a source youhaven't seen for yourself.
Don't add material that'snot supported by sources.
Don'tplace external links in the body of articles.
Don't add references forobvious information.
Don't useall-numeric date formats other than YYYY-MM-DD.
Don't change anestablished reference style without consensus.
