Many of the people attracted to writing an encyclopedia tend to enjoy mulling and deliberating on a variety of topics, and do not mind weighing in with their opinions when not asked. Involving yourself in a discussion over a political, social or cultural issue as it relates to articles is encouraged.
What is not encouraged is involving yourself in disputes or contentious issues that occur between editors themselves, unless it directly relates to you. Sometimes you may have information that is helpful in sorting out a dispute between editors. You should exercise caution and adhere to strict standards ofcivility when you attempt to enlighten a contentious discussion between editors. There is rarely a reason to jump into an argument, and doing so often ends up fanning the flames of the dispute, making resolution of the conflict less likely and damaging your own reputation in the process.
Usually, it is better just to butt out and let the editors resolve the problem between themselves.
