TheWihan Quartet (Czech:Wihanovo kvarteto) is aCzechstring quartet currently in residence at theTrinity College of Music,London. The quartet was founded at thePrague Academy of Musical Arts in 1985 by Leoš Čepický (violin), Jan Schulmeister (violin), Jiří Žigmund (viola) and Aleš Kaspřík (cello). The group's teacher wasAntonín Kohout of theSmetana Quartet and it took its name ofHanuš Wihan (1855–1920), cellist and spiritus rector of theBohemian Quartet.[1]
The quartet won thePrague Spring International Music Competition (1988), the chamber music competition atTrapani,Sicily (1990), and theLondon International String Quartet Competition (1991).[1] Since then it has toured extensively, including appearances at major festivals inEurope and theFar East, several tours to theUnited States,Japan,Australia, andNew Zealand. The group has drawn particular acclaim for their performances and recordings of the works ofDvořák andJanáček.[2] They have also had success with theBeethoven quartets, all of which they have recorded.[1]
