Wiremu Katene (died 1 November 1895), also known asWi Katene, was a New Zealand politician.
In 1872 he became the firstMāori to be appointed to theExecutive Council, becoming the first indigenousMinister of the Crown. He was also a member of theHouse of Representatives from1871 to 1875, and again in1887.[1]
He died on 1 November 1895.[2] The politicianHana-Rawhiti Maipi-Clarke is a descendant.[3]
