History

[edit]

The hospital was built on the site of aVictorian mansion known as Wexham Park and was completed in 1965.[4][5] The design led to an award from theRoyal Institute of British Architects.[4] An expanded recovery centre was opened bySophie Christiansen in June 2013[6] and a newaccident and emergency department opened on 3 April 2019.[7]

Services

[edit]

The hospital provides services includingemergency, trauma and orthopaedic surgery, plastic and reconstructive surgery, paediatric, coronary care andmaternity services. It is an associateteaching hospital for theLondon andOxfordpostgraduate medical and dental education organisations. It receives fully qualified nationally appointedtrainees who are undertaking postgraduate training in a variety ofspecialties.[8]

The hospital was founded by pioneeringBritish plastic surgeon Stewart Harrison,[9] who had trained with plastic surgeonHarold Gillies. On opening in 1966, theplastic surgery unit rapidly became known as a majorUK centre forhand surgery and had the only accreditedsenior registrar post in hand surgery nationally.[10] In 1949, Harrison and Gillies had performed a pioneering operation to reconstruct the face of a patient born with acongenitally recessedmaxilla. This complex operation marked the beginnings of the speciality ofcraniofacial surgery. Among the observers wasFrench plastic surgeonPaul Tessier, who went on to refine the technique for the treatment of severely deformed children.[9] Harrison, a graduate of theUniversity of Glasgow (MB ChB 1935),[11] was a founding member of theBritish Society for Surgery of the Hand (BSSH). In 1972, he served as the Society's President. In 1976 he was President of the British Association of Plastic Surgeons, now the British Association of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons (BAPRAS)).[9][12]
