Weston is a village andcivil parish in theSouth Holland district ofLincolnshire,England.[1] It is situated approximately 2 miles (3 km) north-east from the town ofSpalding. The Civil Parish also includesWeston Hills.[1] The population of the civil parish includingAustendike was at the 2011 census 2,054.[2]

History

There is evidence of aRomano-British settlement which consists ofearthworks and pottery dating from the 1st to 2nd centuries AD.[3]

The name is from the Old EnglishWest+tun, or "West Village". It is written as "Westune" in theDomesday Book.[4]

Weston railway station on the Spalding and Norwich Railway opened in 1858 and closed in 1959.[5]

Thedeserted medieval village ofWykeham was once the site of Wykeham Hall, the country residence of the prior of Spalding. All that is left today areearthworks and the ruined chapel ofSaint Nicholas.[6]

Church

Theecclesiastical parish is Weston St Mary[7] It is one of the three parishes in the relatively smallCowbit group of theDeanery ofWest Elloe, in theDiocese of Lincoln. The parish is called Weston St Mary to differentiate it from the adjacent Weston Hills, also in theCowbit group. The third parish is Cowbit itself.[8]

Thelimestone parish church is a Grade Ilisted building dedicated toSaint Mary and dates from 1170. It was restored byGeorge Gilbert Scott between 1858 and 1867, and byJ. L. Pearson 1885–56. It has a 15th-century west tower, and thefont dates from 1200.[9] Thelychgate is a Grade II listed war memorial erected in 1918 of red brick and wood.[10] The churchyard cross is also Grade II listed and ascheduled monument, being medieval in origin with modern additions.[11]
