Western Algerian Arabic (also known asNorthwestern Algerian Arabic,Oranese Arabic orOranian Arabic; inArabic:الوهرانية,romanized: al-wahrāniya) is adialectal continuum ofAlgerian dialectsArabic, mainly spoken inOran,Algeria.[1]
It the western regional dialect ofAlgerian Arabic, belongs to theMaghrebi Arabic family, and marked by aBerber andSpanish substrates.[2] As well it shares a rich vocabulary common with as theMaltese and theTunisian Arabic. It has become known outside of Algeria, notably thanks to the Algerianfolk musicRaï since the 1980s.
