Werwulf is an upcomingperiodhorror film co-written and directed byRobert Eggers. The film will starAaron Taylor-Johnson. It is scheduled to be released in the United States byFocus Features on December 25, 2026.

Premise

In 13th-century England, a mysterious creature stalks a foggy countryside as local folklore becomes a terrifying reality for the villagers.[1]

In January 2025, it was announced that ahorror film written and directed byRobert Eggers titledWerwulf was in development, which was co-written bySjón, who had previously worked with Eggers inThe Northman (2022). The film would be set in 13th-centuryEngland, and would featureMiddle English.[2] Eggers went on to say thatWerwulf was the darkest script he had ever written.[3]

In July 2025,Aaron Taylor-Johnson joined the cast as the title character, withLily-Rose Depp,Willem Dafoe, andRalph Ineson in talks to join.Working Title Films, along with its producersTim Bevan andEric Fellner, would also join the project.[4][5][6]

Filming

In July 2025, acasting call announced that shooting forWerwulf would begin inElstree in September.[7] In September 2025, Taylor-Johnson toldEsquire that production would officially start on September 8.[8] On October 22, 2025,Screen Daily reported thatprincipal photography was underway atSky Studios Elstree, England.[9] Filming occurred on a makeshift village set atBourne Wood inSurrey from November 11 to 17.[10][discuss]Jarin Blaschke serves as the cinematographer, after previously working with Eggers on his previous films.[11][non-primary source needed]

Dafoe said that filming would also occur inWales.[12] In November 2025, it was confirmed that production would move to the Crychan Forest and North Crychan Forest Quarry on the border of theBrecon Beacons and theCambrian Mountains, between November 24 and concluding on December 19.[13] Filming will begin on December 3 and last until December 13.[14]

Filming was expected near Sharp Tor onDartmoor in December 2025, but began a month early on November 20 with Taylor-Johnson on set. A small set was constructed betweenWidecombe andPostbridge. The site was used to capture only a minute of footage.[15][16][17]

Release

Werwulf is scheduled to be released in the United States byFocus Features on December 25, 2026.[2]
