Wellstead is a small rural town andlocality of theCity of Albany in theGreat Southern region ofWestern Australia. Located betweenAlbany andEsperance, the locality stretches along theSouthern Ocean coast, while the townsite is located inland, on theSouth Coast Highway.[3][4]
The name commemorates the Wellstead family who settled in the area in 1860 and had held grazing land betweenCape Riche (which is part of the locality) andBremer Bay.Farmland was opened up in the area in the 1960s forcereal cropping and land was set aside for a town site. The town site was gazetted in 1965 shortly after establishing atelephone exchange.[5][6]
John Wellstead still lived in the area in 1881 and sold 700 head ofcattle via the market inAlbany early the same year.[7] He died in Albany in 1896[8] but his sons, including John Jr., continued the family pastoral interests in the area.
The surrounding areas producewheat and othercereal crops. The town is areceival site forCooperative Bulk Handling.[9]
