Wehani rice, also known asCalifornia RedJasmine Rice, is a variety of aromaticbrown rice developed in the late 20th century byLundberg Family Farms ofRichvale,California. The name of the rice originates from the brothers of the family, Wendell, Eldon, Homer, Albert, and Harlan Lundberg.[1]
Wehani rice was developed frombasmati rice seeds, which originate fromIndia.[2] The grains of Wehani rice are reddish-brown in color and resemblewild rice. When cooked, the rice produces an aroma similar to that of hot butteredpopcorn orpeanuts and is slightly chewy in texture.[3][4]
Being developed from basmati rice, this variety of rice can be classified asOryza sativa, or Asian rice. It can be placed more specifically in theindica subspecies.[5]
