Waadhoeke is amunicipality ofFriesland in the northernNetherlands. It was established 1 January 2018 and consists of the former municipalities ofFranekeradeel,het Bildt,Menameradiel and parts ofLittenseradiel, all four of which were dissolved on the same day.[1]

The municipality is located in the province of Friesland, in the north of the Netherlands. Waadhoeke is bordered byHarlingen,Terschelling,Noardeast-Fryslân,Leeuwarden andSúdwest-Fryslân. The population in January 2019 was 46,133.[2] It is Friesland'ssixth most populous municipality. The largest population centre (2018 population, 12,793) isFraneker. The residents speakDutch,West Frisian orBildts (a dialect in the former municipality het Bildt).

Etymology

The municipality is named after theWadden Sea (West Frisian:Waadsee). The municipality is a part or corner (West Frisian:hoeke) of the province of Friesland.[3]

A small part of the villageAlde Leie lies within the municipality. The settlement ofRitsumazijl is also located in the municipality, but is not (yet) officially considered a village.

Transport

A section of theA31 bypasses the towns of Franeker and Dronryp.

Trains operated byArriva provide passenger services on theHarlingen–Nieuweschans railway, with stops inFraneker,Dronryp andDeinum.

Van Harinxmakanaal is a major canal. It passes Franeker, Dronryp and Deinum.
